Goseong County in South Gyeongsang Province has completed a renovation of the Goseong Mask Museum and began trial operations on Jan. 2, with an official reopening ceremony set for Jan. 12 at 2:40 p.m. The county invested about 2 billion won (provincial and county funds) in the year-long remodel to reorganize and strengthen exhibition spaces and expand the collection storage. The first-floor permanent exhibition now highlights mask traditions from the region, including Goseong Ogwangdae, Tongyeong Ogwangdae, and Jinju Ogwangdae, as well as village ritual masks such as Hahoe Byeolsingut (a traditional mask dance ritual). The second floor will host a special exhibition marking the museum’s 20th anniversary and traces the museum’s history and the cultural value of masks. A new multipurpose cultural space called “Sarangchae” (a traditional reception room) was added for rest, lectures, education, and meetings, and the storage facility has been enlarged on the third floor. Officials expect the museum to serve as a cultural hub linking tradition and modern experiences.
