Osukhwan (71) and his daughter O Seul-gi (46), directors of the Joseon Minhwa Museum in Yeongwol and the Korean Minhwa Museum in Gangjin respectively, held the “Minhwa Takeoff” exhibition in Seoul showcasing traditional and contemporary minhwa (Korean folk painting). The annual exhibition—now in its sixth year—focused on “repetition and pattern” and included winners from a 26-year minhwa competition that the museums have run to promote popularization and globalization of the genre. Osukhwan, who opened Korea’s first minhwa museum in 2000 and has collected some 5,000 works (including adult-themed chunhwa), says he has not sold a single piece so they can be passed intact to future generations. O Seul-gi, who runs a museum in a famed celadon (Goryeo pottery) region, has published research on their collections, developed 1,300+ minhwa-based products through a brand, and will receive a Ministry of Culture award. They say minhwa reflects ancestors’ hopes and love and should be carried forward to global audiences.
