At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun visited Samsung Electronics’ booth and proposed collaboration ideas that blend the automaker’s robotics with home appliances. He suggested combining Hyundai’s next-generation autonomous robot platform, MobED, with robotic vacuum cleaners—rethinking traditional designs by asking whether wheels (바퀴) must always be underneath. MobED uses four wheels for stable travel over uneven surfaces and slopes, allowing use beyond flat indoor floors into industrial and outdoor settings. If realized with Samsung, new types of home appliance robots could emerge, signaling Hyundai’s push from carmaker toward a broader technology company. The report also notes a reciprocal trend: appliance and electronics firms, especially from China (e.g., Dreame, BYD, Xiaomi), are moving into electric vehicles. Industry observers say robotics-developed capabilities in driving, control, and AI could expand into appliances, logistics, and services—blurring boundaries between sectors and shifting competition to core technologies and platforms.
