A new creative yeonhui (traditional Korean performance-play) titled ‘Young Mother, Old Daughter’ opens at Chiak Arts Center in Wonju on Jan. 14, with additional performances on Jan. 15. Performed by the Maejin Nongak troupe, the play uses music, rhythm, and audience interaction to turn an aging mother–daughter relationship into a theatrical journey. After a father afflicted by a strange hunger devours his nine sons, home and city, the mother and her aging daughter set out to find remnants and perform funerary rites. Through songs (sori) and playful chants (chuimsae), the performers blend ritual, lament, and humor—staging a lively funeral with flowers left by the mother and transforming grief into consolation. The production explores time, loss, mutual dependence, and rebirth as the daughter emerges renewed to continue life’s path.
