Government Launches Special Discount Event to Curb Rising Mackerel Prices

South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will hold a “Korea Seafood Festival — Mackerel Special Discount” from Jan. 8–25 to ease household food cost pressure after steep mackerel price increases. Nineteen offline retailers including E-Mart, Hanaro Mart, Lotte Mart and Mega Mart will offer 30%–60% discounts on mackerel (godeungeo) per shopper up to a 10,000 won limit. The ministry also plans to release about 2,000 tons of government stockpiled mackerel to further stabilize prices, and will pursue diversified import sources amid falling Norwegian catches and exchange-rate effects.
