French gypsy swing guitarist Stephan Rembel will perform with his trio in Seoul (Seongsu Art Hall) on April 24 and in Jeonju (The Vine Hall) on April 25. Born in Paris and raised in Fontainebleau, Rembel is known for his rendition of the original soundtrack from Woody Allen’s film Midnight in Paris and continues the tradition of Django Reinhardt, the Romani (Roma/Gypsy) guitarist who founded gypsy jazz. The trio—two guitars and an upright bass—will play classics like “Bistro Fada,” café-inspired French night pieces, 1920s–30s gypsy jazz swing, and more melancholic European melodies. The program also honors Reinhardt’s birthday week. Joining Rembel are London-born guitarist Josh Kay and Brooklyn-based electric/upright bassist Ari Polman-Cohen. The concert celebrates 140 years of France–Korea diplomatic ties and is supported by the Cultural Section of the French Embassy in Korea.
