The National Folk Museum in Seoul drew 2.28 million visitors last year, of which 1.35 million (59.2%) were foreigners, the highest foreign visitor share among Korea’s public museums. Rising global interest in K-culture and in everyday Korean life—shown in the museum’s permanent exhibitions on “a Korean’s life,” seasonal customs, rites, work and beliefs—has driven the trend. Proximity to Gyeongbokgung Palace (a nearby royal palace) and hands-on programs also boosted visits; many tourists cited exhibits and experiential content as main reasons to come. The museum, marking its 80th anniversary this year, plans expanded cultural shops and more foreign-targeted programs to improve visitor experience.
