Korea’s theater scene welcomes major international hits and fresh new plays in 2026. Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away (센과 치히로의 행방불명) opens Jan 7–Mar 22 at the Seoul Arts Center after sold-out runs across Japan, the UK West End and China, featuring live orchestral music by composer Joe Hisaishi. Disney’s Frozen (프로즌), arriving in August at the Charlotte Theater, recreates its icy world and songs like “Let It Go” in a stage musical. Other international imports debuting in Korea include Hell’s Kitchen (헬스키친), Choir of Man (콰이어 오브 맨) and new West End works, while classics such as Billy Elliot, Chicago and The Phantom of the Opera return. Korean theater companies also present notable new plays: a Korean adaptation of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya titled Banya Aje (반야 아재), Big Mother (빅 마더) about information power in the big-data era, and socially probing originals like A.P.A.R.T. Star-driven productions and gender‑free casting (젠더 프리 캐스팅) are drawing attention, including Moon Geun-young’s stage return in Orphans. Observers say these high-profile productions could energize Korea’s performing arts market.
