South Korea’s 2026 performing arts season is packed with high-profile international and domestic productions as the live theater market continues to grow. Touring stage adaptations include a sold-out theatrical version of Miyazaki Hayao’s animated classic “Spirited Away” featuring puppetry and a live 11-piece orchestra with music by Joe Hisaishi. Thought-provoking plays returning or debuting include Turing Machine, THE WASP (a psychological drama about school violence), and new translations of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. Korean creative musical theater (K-musicals) sees many world premieres such as James Byron Dean, Green (inspired by Kim Dong-in and Othello), and A High School Librarian’s Glory and Tragedy, while big commercial titles include Frozen with new songs and spectacular stage effects. The dance scene will host major international choreographers—Crystal Pite, Alexander Ekman, Wayne McGregor—and landmark companies like Béjart Ballet and Monte-Carlo Ballet, bringing narrative contemporary works and large-scale ballets to Seoul. Overall, the season blends blockbuster musicals, bold Korean originals, and global dance auteurs, reflecting the expanding K-culture stage economy.
