Why Museums Should Be for Everyone

Gyeonggi Museum director Jeon Seung-bo argues that museums must be genuinely accessible public spaces rather than elite institutions. Many people avoid art because of school memories, specialist language, and intimidating museum atmospheres. Museums traditionally protect art, but when they separate art from everyday life they become the domain of a few. “Museums for everyone” means lowering barriers to understanding—encouraging diverse interpretations, active participation, and welcoming visitors without demanding a single correct response. In a fast-changing society, museums offer rare places to pause, feel, and reflect. Korea’s museum culture is still developing because a broad base of art appreciation (the foundation of a healthy ecosystem) is lacking. The author hopes more people will come to enjoy art casually and believes museums can shape minds and society through art (미술관).
