Korean Arts Groups Fight Against Integration Plans

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in South Korea plans to consolidate the administrative offices and boards of five national arts organizations, including the National Contemporary Dance Company (NCDC). This has led to opposition from the dance community, concerned about preserving artistic diversity and independence. A petition against the integration gathered over 1,000 signatures within a day. The critics argue that the different artistic expressions of opera, chorus, ballet, symphony orchestra, and contemporary dance could be undermined by this amalgamation, potentially leading to reduced budgets which are already limited for groups like the NCDC. They demand a reassessment of the merger plans to ensure the sustainability of the arts.
