Korean art institutions are seizing global interest in K-culture by rolling out major exhibitions and festivals in 2026. The Paik Nam‑June Center in Yongin marks the 20th anniversary of media-art pioneer Paik Nam‑June with the restoration and reactivation of his 1960s robot sculpture “K456,” a robotic opera performance, a media‑art festival, symposium and a commemorative exhibition (Paik Nam‑June Media Art Festival). Three major biennales—Korea’s national pavilion at the Venice Biennale (May–Nov), the Gwangju Biennale (Sept–Nov) and the Busan Biennale (Sept–Nov)—will present ambitious programs exploring contemporary Korean art, postcolonial and social memory themes. Large museums are also expanding international connectivity: a Pompidou Seoul branch will open in May at 63 Building, a new performance/digital art space (Seoseoul Museum) will launch later in the year, and Busan Museum of Art reopens with flexible large-scale galleries. National and municipal museum leadership changes after the June local elections may influence programming and governance. Major public and private museums plan exhibitions foregrounding gender and minority perspectives, global collaborations and media/digital works—including retrospectives like Damien Hirst’s Asia debut and thematic shows on conceptual and decay-themed art.
