Skip the Serum, Eat the Vitamin C: Fruit Improves Winter Skin Health

Researchers suggest eating vitamin C–rich fruits may be more effective than topical serums for improving skin structure and repair. Studies indicate vitamin C in cosmetics has limited penetration through the skin’s oil barrier, while dietary vitamin C is actively transported into cells by SVCT (sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter). A New Zealand study gave vitamin C–rich kiwifruit to participants for eight weeks and found skin density increased roughly 48% and epidermal regeneration markers rose about 30%. Experts call regular intake a long-term investment against aging and recommend daily consumption of five kinds of fruits and vegetables, including at least one high–vitamin C food; seasonal Korean produce like gamgyul (tangerine) and strawberries can meet daily needs. The message: nourish skin from the table, not just the vanity.
