The Wooyang Art Museum in Gyeongju is hosting “Turner: Into Light and Shadow,” a 250th-anniversary exhibition in collaboration with Manchester’s Whitworth Gallery. The show brings together 86 works—watercolors, oils and prints—including the complete Liber Studiorum studio series (71 mezzotint prints) produced by J.M.W. Turner between 1807–1819. Once considered a secondary medium, printmaking became for Turner a serious artistic field; he created over 100 original sketches for the series, personally engraved 11 plates, and used the mezzotint (traditional copperplate print technique) to capture atmosphere and light. The Whitworth’s Liber Studiorum prints are on public display together for the first time in about a century, paired with Turner watercolors so visitors can compare how his signature light, color and air translate across mediums. The exhibition runs through May 25.
