High-quality Carbs in Middle Age Linked to Healthier Aging

A long-term study using Nurses’ Health Study data (1984–2016) found that women who ate more high-quality carbohydrates and dietary fiber in midlife—mainly from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes—had up to a 37% higher chance of “healthy aging” to age 70. Healthy aging was defined as surviving to 70 without 11 major chronic diseases, and with preserved physical function, memory, and mental health. In contrast, high intake of refined carbs (white bread, white rice, sugar, pastries) was associated with a 13% lower chance of healthy aging. Researchers stress that the issue is carb quality rather than carbs per se: unrefined complex carbs (and fiber) support satiety, steady blood sugar, brain and gut health, while refined carbs lose fiber and micronutrients during processing and can promote blood sugar spikes and inflammation. The takeaway: choosing high-quality carbohydrates in daily diets during middle age may measurably influence longevity and quality of life.
