On January 1, the first day of the Byeong-o year (병오년), thousands gathered at sunrise spots across South Korea despite a deep cold snap, with Seoul’s Inwangsan, Namsan, Naksan Park and Sky Park drawing packed crowds. Over 100,000 people visited Ganjeolgot in Ulsan (the point on the Korean mainland where the sun rises first) to watch the year’s first sunrise. Visitors bundled in scarves, gloves and blankets made wishes for better times amid economic worries, hoping for stable prices and relief for ordinary people.
