Korean ice cream exports have hit a record, surpassing $120 million this year as brands expand in North America, Southeast Asia and Europe. Major companies Binggrae and Lotte Wellfood led growth by adapting flavors, packaging and distribution to local tastes. Binggrae’s iconic Melona and Bong-Eo Ssamanco (붕어싸만코: fish-shaped filled ice cream snack) now ship to over 30 countries; Melona also launched a plant-based version for Europe to meet dairy regulations and consumer demand. Exports rose from $72.4M in 2021 to an estimated $120M+ in 2024, with the U.S., Philippines, Canada and Japan among top markets. Lotte accelerated overseas expansion through exports and local production in India after acquiring and rebranding a local ice cream maker, boosting regional sales. Industry insiders say targeted localization of products and channel partnerships with mainstream retailers helped K-ice cream move from ethnic markets into mainstream dessert aisles worldwide.
