Seoul will host large New Year’s Eve countdown events across the city, including the traditional Bosingak bell-ringing (Bosingak: historic bell at the heart of Seoul used for New Year’s bell-ringing ceremonies) at 10:50 PM where Mayor Oh Se-hoon and 11 citizen representatives will ring the bell at midnight. Performances include the K-Performance contest winners and rock band Crying Nut. Major sites include Gwanghwamun Plaza with synchronized messages projected on the Gwanghwamun wall and eight nearby buildings, DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) featuring a media countdown and fireworks, and Myeongdong’s media art countdown near the Shinsegae Department Store. Extended operations include markets and light festivals along Cheonggyecheon until 1:00 AM, Seoul Plaza skating until 12:30 AM, and subway service extended to 2:00 AM. Authorities designated six crowd-control priority zones (Jonggak, Gwanghwamun, DDP, Myeongdong, Namsan, Achasan) and will deploy police, firefighters, safety staff, and mobile command centers to monitor crowds and ensure safety; some routes and trail access (Achasan capped at 6,000 climbers) may be restricted. Officials urge visitors to enjoy diverse cultural and arts events while prioritizing safety.
