Dishwasher for Fruits and Veggies? Experts Say Don’t

A popular SNS “life hack” suggests washing fruits and vegetables in a dishwasher to remove pesticides and dirt, but food safety experts strongly advise against it. Dishwashers use detergents and rinse agents designed for dishes, not food, and residues could chemically contaminate produce. The moist, warm, and dark dishwasher environment also encourages mold and yeast growth, and circulating wash water can cause cross-contamination from food scraps or allergens. High temperatures and strong water pressure may damage texture and freshness, especially for bruised produce. Experts recommend the basic method: rinse produce under cold running water and scrub with clean hands or a vegetable brush. Do not use dish soap, general kitchen detergent, or unproven produce cleansers; avoid soaking (immersion) and always wash items before peeling or cutting.
