Yeosu will host the world’s first international expo focused on islands from Sept 5 to Nov 4, 2026, under the theme “Connecting Islands, Sea and Future.” The event will showcase the future value of islands and propose sustainable development models, addressing issues like environmental change and population decline as global challenges. The main site at Jinmo district will feature eight pavilions — including theme, marine ecology, future islands, shared islands, culture, playground, and food & market halls — using media art and interactive exhibits to explore island sustainability, marine ecosystem recovery, renewable energy, and future technologies. Satellite venues on Geomundo and Gaedo islands will offer trekking, camping, fishing village culture, and island food experiences, while the 2012 expo legacy site will serve as a hub for forums and exhibitions. Organizers aim for participation from 30 countries and 3 million visitors, with goals to boost island residents’ incomes, expand local food (로컬푸드) and develop island travel routes. The expo seeks to present a blueprint for island industries, balanced national development, and climate crisis responses.
