Sejong Cyber University Hosts 2nd Brewing Championship

Sejong Cyber University’s Barista & Sommelier Department held its 2nd Brewing Championship at the Jumong Hall, featuring 32 competitors (students and members of the public). The contest used a Blind Cup (blind tasting) sensory evaluation with six external judges to ensure fairness and professionalism. Entries were judged solely on sensory criteria — aroma, balance, clean cup, and aftertaste — highlighting consistent flavor execution and cup quality under constrained conditions. Gold went to Min Cheol-hong, silver to Shim Hyo-rim, and bronzes to Kim Hyung-bin and Song Ji-eun (joint). Organizer Prof. Um Kyung-ja said the blind sensory format objectively assessed fundamentals, technique, and extraction, turning the event into both hands-on education and a growth platform. Sponsors included Acts29, Geumseong Coffee, JavaCafe, Mollif, and Brita, and the department plans to expand practice-focused training and industry-linked programs to cultivate coffee professionals.
