The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has announced its 2026 Seafood Safety Survey Plan to ensure safe domestic seafood supply. Authorities will conduct 22,500 safety tests on all domestically produced seafood, screening 196 items including radiation, veterinary drugs, heavy metals and banned substances. Seasonal and holiday-focused inspections will continue, and farms with violations will face targeted, intensified controls. Due to earlier occurrences of paralytic shellfish toxin, monitoring periods are expanded beyond the traditional spring window to include January–February and July–October, with increased testing frequency at ten early‑occurrence sites. Customized, ongoing radiation testing will consider production methods (catch vs. aquaculture), and pre-market checks at auction houses and farms will be maintained with private partners. Public engagement programs like the “Seafood Safety Citizen Communication Group” and “Citizen-requested Radiation Tests” will continue, and results will be published promptly and transparently. The ministry said it aims to protect public health and trust through strict management and preventive measures.
