The Monte-Carlo Ballet will present a reimagined, psychologically intense version of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake at Seoul Arts Center Opera House on May 16–17 next year. Choreographed by acclaimed director Jean-Christophe Maillot, the production (LAC) transforms the familiar fairy-tale into a dark, black-and-white psychological drama that probes trauma, family conflict and the clash of good and evil. Maillot, a decorated modern-ballet choreographer, emphasizes movement-driven storytelling that reveals character and emotion without text. The company’s cast includes Korean-born principal dancer Jae-yong Ahn (the first Korean to join the Monte-Carlo Ballet), alongside other Korean artists. Producers say this version questions human nature through the prince’s wavering between purity and eroticism.
