Jinju City in South Gyeongsang Province is moving ahead with a project to turn the abandoned Nammunsan Station into a park with rest and recreation facilities. Opened in 1925 and closed in 2012 after the Gyeongjeon Line (경전선) was realigned and electrified, the station has been unused for about a decade. The city has been converting disused stations along the old Gyeongjeon Line into bicycle-pathside parks, and completion of the Nammunsan project will finish that corridor’s station-to-park conversions. The plan preserves the station’s historical traces while adding a children’s playground, cultural spaces, public toilets and other amenities. The station’s name means “southern Munsan” (named relative to Munsan Station in Gyeonggi Province). Mayor Cho Gyu-il said he hopes the restored site will honor the past and serve the future with safe, convenient facilities.
