Song Seung-hwan, artistic director of PMC Production, marked his 60th year since debut and received a lifetime achievement award at the 12th Edaily Culture Awards. Starting as a child actor on KBS radio, he has acted in dozens of plays, films and TV shows, worked as a host and produced around 60 stage works. He is best known internationally for creating the nonverbal performance Nanta (난타), which helped bring Korean performing arts to Broadway and the West End and drew over 15.5 million viewers. Despite being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (망막색소변성증) and receiving a level-4 visual impairment rating, Song continues to perform — recently appearing in the play The Dresser in a new role — and is preparing a new original two-person play (male and female leads) set for spring 2027. He praised younger artists’ success, saying Korean musical and theatre talent will sustain K-culture popularity beyond temporary trends, and urged them to aim for global stages like Broadway and the West End.
