South Korea’s tourism rebounded strongly in 2025, reaching a record 18.5 million foreign visitors by Dec. 23 and likely approaching 19 million by year-end — an average of one arrival every 1.68 seconds. Growth was driven by new K-culture hits (e.g., global OTT series like 'K-pop Demon Hunters'), a shift toward purpose-driven spending on Korean lifestyle goods (beauty and health purchases surged), and major policy moves such as reciprocal visa-free entry with China. Hosting APEC 2025 in Gyeongju helped decentralize tourism from Seoul, upgraded local hospitality (including presidential suites and multilingual menus), and deployed QR/NFC payment systems for a wallet-free experience. However, the boom faced setbacks from safety concerns: a major airline accident, large wildfires, and high-profile crimes abroad dampened travel sentiment and shifted preferences toward perceived safer carriers and destinations. The government aims to push for 20 million inbound visitors next year and accelerate a 2030 target of 30 million.
