A viral social media trend shows passengers curling up in economy seats—wrapping their legs and using the seatbelt around knees—to sleep. Medical and aviation experts warn this posture raises the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and potentially fatal pulmonary embolism, especially during long flights with immobility and dry cabin air. Authorities note using the lap belt improperly violates safety rules and can lead to fines. Health guidance includes moving at least hourly on long flights, doing ankle exercises, staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol and tight clothing, and wearing compression stockings for long-haul trips. The FAA stresses the lap belt must sit low on the hips to protect passengers during turbulence.
