After the La Vague (라부부) craze cooled, Korean consumers are shifting toward small, affordable plush goods, and the 1970s Japanese character Monchhichi is rising as a favorite. Introduced by Sekiguchi in 1974, Monchhichi is known for its fluffy fur, round face and thumb-in-mouth pose. Once popular in the 1980s–90s, it had been a niche item until recent demand grew for simple, low-cost mascots. Key stationery and lifestyle stores report steady sales of Monchhichi keyrings and mini dolls, while collaborations with children’s clothing and desktop items have expanded its presence. The character fits current trends: limited derivative products, clear SKUs (product types), and price points around 10,000–30,000 KRW make it an easy, low-risk purchase for both use and collecting. The wider revival of retro characters like Hello Kitty and Snoopy among the MZ generation (young adults) also helps, providing familiar comfort without overexposure. Retailers say Monchhichi’s simple lineup and steady rotation make it a stable seasonal seller rather than a fleeting fad.
