The construction of a National Mountaineering School in Boeun, Chungbuk, has been delayed and is now expected to open in January 2027. The Korea Forest Service is investing 8 billion won to build the school in Sangpan-ri, Sokrisan-myeon; original plans for a 2024 opening were postponed due to a halt in detailed design work (Dec 2023) and a change of site (Sep 2024). The facility will have an 1,800 m² building with an artificial rock-climbing arena, offices, classrooms, dormitories, showers, and a dining hall. Building work started in August and is about 10% complete, targeting completion in October 2026. Local government will spend 1.2 billion won on access roads and parking, finishing by November 2026. This will be the third national mountaineering school in Korea and the first in the central region; the first opened in Sokcho (Gangwon) in 2018. Officials expect the school to promote proper hiking culture and boost regional tourism.
