Buying a 400,000 won 'Survival' Padding? Check This First

As winter sales hit fashion stores (up to 80% off), now is a good time to buy a warm padding jacket. Key factors for a padding’s warmth are the type of filling, its ratio, and fill-power. Natural fillings include duck down (duck down) and goose down (goose down); goose down usually offers better insulation, lighter weight, and longer-lasting loft, so it’s pricier. Duck down is adequate for everyday wear and more affordable. Recycled down (re-extracted from used bedding/clothing) is increasingly used for sustainability but can vary in quality. High-performance synthetic fillings (e.g., PrimaLoft, Thinsulate) are also common as animal-fiber alternatives but still lag behind natural down in loft and warmth. Check the label for the down-to-feather ratio—ideal is around 90:10 or 80:20 (down provides insulation; feathers add structure and prevent clumping). Also check the fill-power: higher numbers (generally 600–700+) mean better loft and heat retention. Verify filling type, mix ratio, and fill-power before buying an expensive padding.
