Behind Kota Kinabalu’s Emerald Sea: The Lively Filipino Market at Night

Kota Kinabalu’s beaches are serene by day, but at dusk the city’s Filipino Market (a traditional night market started by Filipino migrants) comes alive with heat, smoke and human energy. Established by migrants who arrived during the 1970s, the market blends hometown flavors with local ingredients in a crowded open-air bazaar. Stalls overflow with tropical fruits — mango, mangosteen, rambutan and creamy durian (a strong-smelling tropical fruit) — where vendors invite visitors to “tikim” (taste). Deeper inside, dozens of charcoal grills produce thick smoke and sizzle with ayam bakar (grilled chicken), giant squid, tiger prawns and satay skewers glazed in sweet peanut sauce. The scene is raw and vibrant: calloused hands, quick knives, and loud vendor calls form the market’s atmosphere. Practical tips: bring small bills (cash only), don’t carry durian into hotels due to its odor, and wear light clothing because of heat and smoke. The market leaves a lingering charcoal aroma and a memorable impression of everyday life behind the glossy tourist façade.
