Moulin Rouge!, the theatrical adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s film, returns to Korea after a successful 2022 run. The jukebox musical, which won 10 Tony Awards in 2021, reimagines around 70 pop songs (a mashup of familiar hits) into about 20 numbers — from “Lady Marmalade” to “Single Ladies,” “Toxic,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Rolling in the Deep.” Act I delivers dazzling visual spectacle of the cabaret (Moulin Rouge), while Act II focuses on the tragic romance between Christian and Satine. Stars Hong Kwang-ho and Jung Sun-ah — though older than the characters’ original ages — captivate with powerful vocals and nuanced acting, notably in Hong’s rendition of “Rolling in the Deep” and Jung’s “Your Song.” Strong supporting performances and passionate ensemble dancing emphasize that the show itself is both setting and subject: the cabaret is the spectacle.
