How to Keep Your Tangelos (ttangul) Mold-Free — The Simple Box-Flipping Trick

A full box of tangerines (귤, gyul) is a popular winter snack in Korea, but mold can spoil the last fruits. Experts recommend immediately flipping the box upside down when you get it. During transport, fruits at the bottom bear the most weight and are more likely to bruise and rot; flipping the box redistributes pressure and slows spoilage. With the box inverted you can also remove already-pressed fruits early, acting as a quality check. After inspection, keep the lid closed to limit air exposure and prevent drying. Store tangerines in a place with stable, cool temperatures around 10°C — such as a balcony or entrance area — rather than warm indoor rooms. If refrigerating in bags, wrap each fruit in newspaper (신문지) and place them in the vegetable drawer to control moisture. If you find mold, discard the affected fruit immediately; if the box or packaging is contaminated, throw it away. Fruits that looked fine but were next to moldy ones likely carry spores — wash them or wipe with 70–80% rubbing alcohol and eat them soon. Key rules: discard moldy fruits, replace contaminated containers, and clean/consume neighboring fruits promptly to avoid a widespread mold problem.
