Finnish Maestro Sakari Oramo Brings British Music to the Mainstream

Sakari Oramo (b.1965) is a Finnish conductor currently serving as chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Originally a violinist and concertmaster of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, he studied conducting under Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy and began conducting at the Finnish Radio Symphony in 1993. Oramo led the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1998–2008 and served as a guest conductor with the BBC Symphony from 2011 before becoming its chief conductor in 2012; his contract has been extended through 2030. Known for programming 20th-century British composers such as John Poulenc and Gustav Holst, Oramo has helped raise British music’s profile in Europe. In March next year he will tour Korea with the BBC Symphony and perform in Seoul Arts Center with pianist Yiruma Son (Son Yeol-eum).
