European Christmas breads carry culture and tradition. France’s Bûche de Noël (a log-shaped rolled cake) appears on holiday tables, made with sponge cake and chocolate or coffee cream and often decorated to look like tree bark; modern flavors include pistachio, chestnut, and raspberry. Germany’s Stollen is a fruit-and-nut bread with rum, spices, and a heavy dusting of powdered sugar to look like snow; it’s usually made weeks in advance to mature and sliced thin with coffee or tea. Italy’s Panettone (a tall, domed sweet bread from Milan) is fluffy and studded with raisins and citrus peels; it’s eaten plain or sliced with cream or mascarpone. England’s Mince Pies are small hand-sized pies filled with dried fruit, spices, and nuts (historically meat was included); they are believed to bring good luck and are served warm with sugar or ice cream. Each item reflects its country’s holiday customs and is enjoyed with family and guests.
