Robert O'Brien, national security adviser in Donald Trump’s first administration, criticized the South Korean National Assembly on X (formerly Twitter) for aggressive moves against Coupang following a massive customer data breach. O’Brien warned that targeting Coupang could set the stage for discriminatory measures by the Korea Fair Trade Commission and broader regulatory barriers against U.S. tech firms, undermining efforts to rebalance U.S.-Korea trade. He called for a strong, coordinated U.S. response to ensure fair treatment of American companies and to counter China’s growing influence. Coupang is fully owned by U.S.-listed parent Coupang Inc., which donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration and has spent about $10.39 million on lobbying in the U.S. over five years. The controversy follows Coupang’s announcement that about 33.7 million customer accounts had personal data leaked, including names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, and some order details.
