Cheongju city in Chungbuk is transforming the southeastern corridor from Myeongam-dong (a neighborhood) to the forested outskirts of Miwon-myeon (a township) into a family-oriented leisure and staycation hub. The plan includes upgrading the Okhwa Natural Recreation Forest with new experience and healing facilities, launching a 333m Okhwa zip track in March, and officially opening the recently built Okhwa Healing Forest after trials. The city will remodel a nearby private recreation forest into a workation center and convert the troubled Myeongam Observation Tower into a multi-use cultural space with startup rooms and exhibition areas by 2027. Myeongam Amusement Park (Myeongam Yuwonji) will attract private investment for attractions like a Ferris wheel, themed electric leisure boats, and a musical fountain to create a nightscape attraction. A closed mineral spring site will be turned into an eco-friendly park with water areas, woodland rest spots, wildflower gardens, toad habitats and native tree groves; construction is planned from 2026 with a total budget of 6.9 billion won. A children’s national sports center with a gym, indoor water play area and VR sports room will also be built. Mayor Lee says the project is central to making Cheongju a stay-and-play tourism city combining nature and urban spaces.
