Korean theater and performing arts had a standout 2025. Homegrown K-musicals like Maybe Happy Ending and The Great Gatsby earned strong international acclaim—Maybe Happy Ending won six Tony Awards (the U.S. theater equivalent of the Oscars), including Best Musical and Best Score, marking a milestone as its playwright became the first Korean Tony winner. The Great Gatsby, produced by a Korean lead producer, ran in Broadway, London’s West End, and Korea simultaneously. Other Korean works, such as Swag Age: Roar, Joseon!, also drew praise overseas. Domestic demand surged: in Q3 2025 ticket sales hit a record 653 million tickets booked and 461.5 billion won in sales (up 20% year-on-year), led by pop concerts and musicals. Young Korean ballet and classical talents also made headlines—ballet dancer Jeon Min-cheol became a first soloist at the Mariinsky Ballet and won the Youth America Grand Prix; multiple Korean dancers placed highly in international contests; pianist Kim Se-hyun and cellist Lee Jae-ri won major international prizes. The growth has prompted increased government support for K-musical exports ahead of expected continued momentum into 2026.
