Ahead of Christmas, crowds gathered in front of Daejeon bakery Seongsimdang (a famous bakery) as early as 3 a.m. in subzero temperatures to buy the winter-limited 'Strawberry Siru' cake. The cake went on sale from Dec. 23 at the bakery’s cake boutique, and customers reported queuing up five hours before opening for fear of sell-outs. Resale activity surged on secondhand platforms, with proxy-buying postings seeking people to purchase and deliver cakes for fees, and listings showing prices as high as three times the retail price (4,9000 KRW). Seongsimdang sells the large Strawberry Siru only at its Daejeon boutique and limits purchases to one per person.
