Maestro Myung-Whun Chung to Lead Three Orchestras in Milan, Seoul and Busan

Myung-Whun Chung, who will be 74 in 2027, has been appointed to hold three major leadership roles simultaneously: music director of La Scala in Milan, music director of the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, and artistic director of Classic Busan (Busan Concert Hall and Opera House). His KBS appointment runs 2026–2028, and his La Scala term is 2027–2030; he has served at Classic Busan since 2023. While some may worry about the workload at his age, the classical music world expects manageable travel and strong synergy because none of the posts require full-time on-site presence. Chung typically rehearses orchestras briefly before performances, and plans to focus on opera at La Scala and in Busan while concentrating on symphonic repertoire with the KBS Symphony. The appointments are seen as complementary, enhancing artistic outcomes across the three institutions.
