Three Women Open New Route on CerroSteffen West Face in Patagonia

A three-woman team — Angelina Di Prinzio (Argentina), Paloma Parcas (Chile), and Catalina Oñun (USA) — completed an exploratory ascent of CerroSteffen (3,300m) in remote southern Patagonia. Using a 1965 summit photo to plan their line, they organized an expedition that required several days just to reach the mountain and long waits for a weather window. Seizing a brief improvement, they made a long day’s push to climb and establish a new route on the west face: about 900m of climbing rated WI4 M4. (WI = waterfall ice; M = mixed climbing) The achievement was reported in the December issue of Monthly San magazine.
