Seoul stages are currently showcasing blockbuster productions that dissolve traditional genre boundaries by combining theatrical acting, puppetry (퍼핏), live music, movement and advanced stage technology. The live-on-stage adaptation of Life of Pi turns Yann Martel’s novel and Ang Lee’s film into an immersive theatrical spectacle: realistic, breathing puppetry brings the Bengal tiger Richard Parker to life, high-tech sets and lighting recreate storms, starry skies and oceanic vastness, and actors convey the novel’s psychological depth and philosophical questions about human nature, identity and faith. Similar hybrid productions — including stage versions of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away (센과 치히로의 행방불명) and Totoro (이웃집의 토토로) — use analogue stagecraft, live orchestral scores (notably Joe Hisaishi’s music), and puppetry alongside human performers to spark audience imagination and create a “third actor” onstage. These shows have drawn huge audiences and sold-out runs by offering both literary depth and cinematic spectacle in live theatre.
