The South Korean Forest Service has finalized a 181.5 billion won (about $136 million) budget for the National Warm-Temperate Botanical Garden, increasing the project cost by 23% from its 2022 estimate. Scheduled for completion in 2030, the renovated site (previously Wando Arboretum) will become a specialized warm-temperate forest exhibit and a southern frontline for climate crisis response. The 376-hectare facility (about 7.5 times the size of Seoul Arboretum) will include themed collections, exhibition greenhouses, a treetop deck road, a lake garden center, an observation tower, and a monorail. The budget rise covers the garden’s climate-adaptation importance, inclusion of domestic wooden structures, Barrier-Free (BF) certification (accessibility standard), and inflation. Construction planning will start next year with a five-year build period. Officials say the garden will serve conservation, research and public healing functions by promoting harmony between people and nature.
