Gangneung city in Gangwon Province plans to expand the Solhyang Arboretum (pine-scent arboretum) from 78.6 ha to 138.86 ha by 2030, aiming to make it a leading national arboretum. The city has completed consultations with the Korea Forest Service and is changing development plans. Initial work includes relocating and expanding a children’s forest experience center (유아숲체험원) near the entrance, adding parking and an access road, building a propagation greenhouse, and installing night landscape lighting. The arboretum, opened in 2013 with themed gardens like an “ecological observation trail,” “sky garden,” and “fragrance garden,” is already accessible for wheelchair users via deck roads. Visitor numbers rose from 210,000 last year to about 240,000 this year. The city says the expansion will introduce differentiated exhibits and experiences and progressively enhance facilities to meet growing demand.
