Seoul opens its first major exhibition about Lee Si-young (1869–1953), the nation’s first vice president, at the Lee Hoe-young Memorial Hall through March 1 (Korean Independence Movement Day). Titled 'Three Tears – Seongjae Lee Si-young,' the show marks the 120th anniversary of the Eulsa Treaty and the 80th anniversary of Liberation, tracing his life as an official who opposed the 1905 Eulsa Treaty, an exile who helped build armed independence bases and the Sinheung Military Academy in Siberia, and a leader in the Provisional Government who later served as vice president after liberation. The exhibition is organized into three sections: 'Tears of the Korean Empire: Ohotongjae' (his protests against the Eulsa Treaty), 'Tears of the Provisional Government: The Old Bowler Hat' (his grief upon returning to Korea in 1945 after personal loss), and 'Tears of the Republic: Tears Before the Youth' (his resignation amid the 1951 National Fire Brigade incident involving alleged embezzlement and youth deaths). Newly displayed items include his handwritten biography manuscript 'Seongjae Seonsaeng Silgi,' the protest document 'Daeso Wisin Joyak Byeonmyeongseo' written after the Eulsa Treaty, and other exile-era records. The exhibition is free and open daily 10:00–18:00 except Mondays. (Eulsa Treaty: 1905 treaty that made Korea a protectorate of Japan; Sinheung Military Academy: an independence movement military school.)
