Sejong Center announced its ‘2026 Sejong Season’ featuring 27 productions across Seoul’s municipal arts companies — including traditional Korean music (gugak), dance, musical theatre, choral works, opera, ballet and drama. The program aims to finalize a repertoire-theater model after five years of development, shifting from passive “watching” to active “experiencing” by expanding audience-participation stages and rethinking theater spaces. Highlights: Seoul City Choir revives classics like Carmina Burana and offers a sing-along Messiah; Seoul Drama Company opens with the Korean premiere of the French play Big Mother and new contemporary works; Seoul Opera stages Verdi’s Nabucco and Puccini’s La Bohème; the Gugak Orchestra blends traditional masters and new compositions; the Musical Company expands original shows including The Tribe and a new take on A Christmas Carol; the Dance Company revisits hits like Speed and presents a healing piece inspired by Seoul gut (a traditional shamanic ritual); and the Ballet Company balances international repertory with Korean contemporary creations such as In the Bamboo Forest. The season emphasizes sustainable production, re-performance expansion, and deeper cultural accessibility.
