The Korea Arts & Culture Education Service (Arts Council Korea) has selected 34 new works across theatre, original musicals, dance, music, opera, and traditional arts for the 18th ‘Performing Arts Creation Workshop — New Works of the Year.’ Launched in 2008, the program supports the entire creative process from production to distribution and has backed 332 new works over 17 editions. Theatre selections address contemporary questions such as memory, loss, women’s lives, and structures of violence (examples: POOL, Body Tilt, Endangered Species). Original musicals explore personal growth and solidarity (examples: The Blue Lion Wanini, James Byron Dean, Green). Dance works interpret future issues—climate crisis, surveillance society, and finite time—through movement (examples: INTIME, JASON Project, MELTING). Music entries blend music and theatre while reinterpreting Korean sentiment (examples: Nangchangnangchang, Jibak Contemporary Series Vol.25, The Old Man Who Lends Romance). New operas revisit historical events and myths to question freedom, justice, and human nature (examples: Opera 2.28, Opera Chandra). Traditional arts selections maintain form while adding modern sensibilities and narratives (examples: Ssanghyangsu, Women’s Nongak - Hello, Peace Ritual, Kim Hyo-young’s Saenghwang Breath X Gut). Performances will run across Seoul (January–March), mainly at Daehangno Arts Theater small stages. Actor Kim Shin-rok was appointed promotional ambassador for the program; she described the workshop as a platform where newly born works first meet audiences and a strong creative partner for artists.
