Yoo Eun-seon, director and artistic director of the National Changgeuk Company (국립창극단), celebrated the troupe’s win of the Best Gugak (traditional Korean music) award at the 12th EDaily Cultural Awards for their modern reimagining of the pansori tale "Simcheong" (심청가). Staged first at the 2025 Jeonju World Sound Festival and later to sold-out shows in Seoul, the production reconceived Simcheong—traditionally a symbol of filial piety—as a character whose sacrifice raises new questions, drawing praise for pushing the boundaries of tradition. The judges lauded the work for proposing new directions for gugak. Yoo said the process sparked lively debate among performers and audiences across generations, and that the company will continue bold reinterpretations of the five pansori masterworks (판소리 다섯 바탕). The troupe, already known for adaptations of Western classics into changgeuk (창극, Korean traditional musical drama), plans a new hybrid piece called "Hyomyeong" blending Korean dance and changgeuk next year. Yoo called the award a major encouragement for the ensemble as they pursue further experimental projects.
