Starbucks Korea will donate 10,000 sacks (200 tons) of eco-friendly coffee compost to 21 selected young farms across 17 regions, chosen by the Rural Development Administration (농정원). Since 2015, Starbucks has partnered with Gyeonggi Province to recycle coffee grounds from stores into compost and distribute it to local farms. The company has signed agreements with government and recycling groups to promote coffee-ground recycling and, over 11 years, has donated about 288,000 sacks (5,770 tons) of compost worth over 1.1 billion KRW. Crops grown with the coffee compost are used as ingredients in food items sold again at Starbucks, creating a circular upcycling model. CEO Son Jeong-hyun said the company will continue upcycling efforts and cooperative models with farmers.
