A funeral rite (Noje — traditional public mourning ceremony) for veteran actress Yoon Seok-hwa was held on Dec. 21 at HanYe Theatre in Seoul’s Daehangno, the site of her former installation theatre and gallery, Jeongmiso. Colleagues and arts figures—including actors Park Jeong-ja and Son Sook, directors and cultural officials—attended despite freezing weather to pay their respects. GIL Hae-yeon, chair of the Korean Theatre Welfare Foundation, praised Yoon’s lifelong dedication to theatre and her habit of posing questions to audiences through art. Fellow actors performed Yoon’s favorite song, and family members joined the farewell. Born in 1956, Yoon debuted in 1975 and became a leading stage actor through works like The Age of Agnes and various musicals and dramas; she also ran Jeongmiso and edited a performing-arts magazine. Yoon was noted for changing perceptions about adoption after publicly adopting two children and supporting adoption causes, though her career faced controversies over past false academic claims and offshore company ties. After battling a malignant brain tumor and undergoing surgery in 2022, she died on Dec. 19; her remains were interred at Yongin Park’s Honor Stone.
